Desley shared her passion for local government, a journey that started with her Great, Great Uncle being the sixth Mayor of Auckland and final encouragement from her father. She spoke about the lessons she’s learned from past city Mayors and how the Auckland Super City has saved over $3 billion since its inception. Desley highlighted the council's ongoing commitment to saving money, noting that last year’s savings target of $50 million was exceeded, reaching $60.4 million. This year, they're on track to hit their goal again.
She also touched on the recent 6.8% rates increase, pointing out that while it may seem high, it’s the lowest in the country, and emphasised that targeted savings have enabled the council to maintain efficiency and fund new projects. Desley expressed frustration with negative politics with those who voice concerns on social media rather than engaging directly with local government.
Lastly, she provided an update on the North Harbour Stadium, where planning is underway to maximise its use more effectively.
