Inspiring Moments from the BEN Breakfast: Paddy Gower
On Tuesday, 15 October 2024, the North Harbour Club (NHC) hosted the latest Business Excellence Network (BEN) breakfast at Regatta Bar & Eatery, Takapuna Beach.
Paddy’s talk offered both humour and deep reflection, as he shared the defining moments of his career. Among these, he highlighted the impact of his groundbreaking documentary on alcohol abuse, which inspired him to quit drinking. Paddy revealed that he is now over 1,000 days sober, describing the transformation as life changing. “I live a full, calm life and am a completely different person without it,” he shared.
Another proud moment for Paddy was his involvement in the successful campaign to have the life-saving drug Trikafta funded by Pharmac, making it free for people with cystic fibrosis in New Zealand. Paddy reflected, “The victory in the fight for Trikafta is by far the best moment of my 22 years in journalism. I'm stoked I got to play a part in it.”
Looking ahead, Paddy spoke of his new role at Stuff, where he hopes to focus on delivering mostly positive news stories, a direction he feels is much needed. He also gave attendees a sneak peek into his upcoming tour, which will blend journalism and stand-up comedy. The tour focuses on connection and sharing uplifting news stories. His Auckland show on 29 November is ideal for corporates—what better way to treat your staff to a Christmas outing? Tickets are available at http://www.paddygower.co.nz.
Throughout his speech, Paddy emphasised the importance of believing in the possible, a mindset he calls "Trained Optimism." His message of hope and resilience struck a chord with everyone present.
This morning's breakfast was another reminder of the power of storytelling and the impact one person can make in the lives of many. It was an inspiring start to the day for all who attended.
